A year of OperaVision

OperaVision has been streaming operas for over 12 months since the site was launched on 9 October 2017. In this time, the platform has streamed 41 shows in total: 36 operas and 5 concerts, galas, and competitions. At this first anniversary, we have already counted 1,38 million video views: 687 404 views for the full-length performances and 697 039 views for bonus videos. OperaVision shows three to four new full-length performances per month, most of them as live streams.

 

The live element is highly valued by the online audience. On 19 October 2018, more than 5 000 people tuned in for Verdi’s Rigoletto live from Teatro Massimo di Palermo – that is four times the capacity of the theatre. Most full-length performances remain online for a period of 6 months. The following for OperaVision is growing at a rate of 1000 new subscribers per month. The variety of the productions offered – from Mozart’s The Magic Flute to Erkel’s Bánk bán and from Bellini’s Norma to Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti – gives the opportunity for first-timers to get to know the well-known repertoire and for specialists to enjoy rarities; simply a rich choice for all opera lovers.

 

The OperaVision website also features multimedia programme notes for every performance, including detailed synopses, insights, context of the productions as well as video-interviews with people involved in the production process such as directors, conductors, stage- and costume designers and soloists. This offer targets opera newcomers who are looking for an introduction in what they are about to watch and serves at the same time the regulars who like to read the programme notes to deepen their understanding of a performance.

 

OperaVision has a big following on social media, which is growing daily on Facebook (18 258 page likes), YouTube (11 789 subscribers), Twitter (5 403 followers), Instagram (2 129 followers). OperaVision publishes a weekly e-newsletter issued in English, French and German to 20 364 recipients. These channels especially target audiences under the age of 35.

 

With these encouraging figures, OperaVision aims to double its YouTube subscribers and views during the following year. The repertoire is to be equally balanced as it is now between familiar repertoire and rare titles. OperaVision plans to expand its audiences across the globe in the next 12 months.
